Speech Pathologists

Speech pathologists are among the first interventionists treating children with special needs and collaborating with their families. This early relationship places SLPs in a unique position to help parents understand their child’s strengths and limitations. It also presents challenges, especially when parents want to discuss issues outside of a speech therapy scope of practice.

Experienced speech pathologists know that social pragmatic capacities are crucial to a child’s successful communication with others. But what about children who don’t respond to interventions targeting this important aspect of speech? And what are the developmental capacities that underlie social pragmatic abilities?

“I’d like parents to participate in their child’s sessions, but I’m not really sure how to do this.”

“I feel confident working with a social skills curriculum, but don't see any carryover to other environments"

“I think I’d meet my treatment goals more effectively if I offer regular parent meetings, but I’m not quite sure I’m ready.”

“I want to respond sensitively yet firmly to children who don’t follow my directions, but that wasn’t part of my training.”

“I have some observations about a child. I think he may need help beyond speech therapy, but I want to be sensitive about making a referral, especially if it’s to a mental health provider.”
